Control Systems & Algorithm Engineering Co-op

Responsibilities

• Design and implement real-time control algorithms for appliance subsystems including thermal, fluidic, and electromechanical components
• Work directly with hardware such as pumps, heaters, boilers, AC/DC, and stepper motors
• Interface with low-cost sensors and implement signal processing, filtering, and estimation techniques like Kalman filters
• Apply classical control methods including frequency response analysis and PID design
• Build and iterate prototypes and test rigs to validate algorithms in real hardware environments
• Collect and analyze experimental data to identify system dynamics and optimize performance
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring control algorithms from concept to embedded deployment

Requirements

• Current student in third year or beyond of a bachelor's program, or enrolled in a master's or doctorate program
• Strong understanding of control system theory, stability margins, and PID design
• Proficiency in embedded C/C++ programming
• Experience with microcontrollers such as STM32, ESP32, or Arduino
• Familiarity with real-time signal processing and sensor fusion techniques
• Comfort working hands-on with hardware systems and actuators
• Ability to work full-time onsite in Needham, MA

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with MATLAB/Simulink for system modeling and model-based design
• Background in system identification and machine-learning-based modeling
• Knowledge of nonlinear optimization algorithms for embedded environments
• Familiarity with TinyML, CMSIS libraries, or other embedded ML frameworks
• Experience with embedded system architecture and software frameworks
