Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical leadership and psychiatric care for older adults in an inpatient setting
• Act as an Approved Clinician under the Mental Health Act, including responsibilities for detention, treatment, and discharge planning
• Conduct comprehensive assessments, diagnoses, and treatment planning for patients with complex mental health conditions such as dementia, depression, and psychosis
• Collaborate closely with the CMHT to ensure continuity of care and effective discharge planning
• Supervise junior doctors and contribute to their training and development
• Participate in clinical governance, service development, and quality improvement initiatives
• Engage with families, carers, and external agencies to ensure holistic, person-centred care

Requirements

• Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
• Inclusion on the Specialist Register for Old Age Psychiatry (or within 6 months of CCT)
• MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
• Approved Clinician status under the Mental Health Act (or eligibility to obtain)
• Extensive experience in inpatient psychiatry and community mental health services
• Strong leadership, communication, and clinical decision-making skills
