Composite Design and Test Engineer

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, analysis, and optimization of advanced composite structures for critical national security applications
• Develop and optimize composite layups, material selection, and manufacturing process integration
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineering teams
• Collaborate with materials scientists, manufacturing engineers, and test engineers to ensure design feasibility
• Oversee prototype fabrication, testing, and data analysis to validate design concepts
• Support structural analysis of composite components using CAD and FEA tools
• Lead R&D initiatives, including securing funding and fostering academic or industry partnerships

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline
• Five (5) years of directly relevant experience in composite design or mechanical engineering
• Active DOE Q Clearance (or ability to obtain and maintain)
• Proficiency with CAD and FEA software tools

Preferred Qualifications

• Graduate degree (MS or PhD) in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field
• Experience with product realization within the NNSA complex
• Deep knowledge of composite manufacturing processes such as prepreg layup or resin transfer molding
• Experience in polymer aging, structural failure mechanisms, and characterization methods
• Demonstrated publication record in composite science research
