Community Service Officer

Responsibilities

• Serve as an unarmed, uniformed ambassador for the UMass Boston Police Department (UMBPD) through community engagement and outreach.
• Perform campus patrols on foot or at designated posts to ensure the safety of property and persons.
• Provide direction, general information, and resources to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
• Assist with non-criminal duties including issuing parking tickets, performing walking escorts, and conducting building checks.
• Respond to non-criminal complaints and assist in emergency situations by administering first aid or directing traffic.
• Monitor access control systems, alarm systems, and CCTV.
• Enforce university policies, by-laws, and the student code of conduct regarding safety and security.
• Prepare detailed reports and logs regarding non-criminal matters such as disturbances or accidents.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license (with the ability to obtain a MA driver's license).
• Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive background check and drug screening.
• Ability to stand for long periods and work in various weather conditions, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Ability to maintain professionalism and composure during stressful or emergency situations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Some college credits from an accredited institution.
• Prior military experience.
• Three years of progressive work experience in the security services industry.
• Previous security experience within a higher education or university environment.
