Communications Intern

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the day-to-day functions of the communications department, including writing press releases, talking points, social media posts, blogs, and media advisories
• Research and build lists of key reporters, editors, producers, and bookers from national and local publications
• Craft and send pitches to news media regarding ACLU campaigns and projects
• Monitor news and media trends and track press clips
• Engage in research projects to inform multi-faceted communications plans

Requirements

• Currently matriculated undergraduate student or equivalent experience
• Completion of at least the first year of an undergraduate degree in communications, public relations, journalism, political science, or a related field
• At least one semester of internship or work experience in journalism, public relations, or communications
• Exceptional writing and editing skills
• Familiarity with news media, online platforms, and media trends
• Must be based in the U.S. for the entire duration of the internship

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience drafting press releases, blogs, or social media posts
• Familiarity with Associated Press style
• Experience with media relations software such as Cision or Meltwater
