About the role
Responsibilities
- Oversee veterinary care and professional services for the Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM)
- Supervise DCM’s surgical facilities and deliver CALAM-aligned surgical services
- Provide investigator consultation, training, and expert protocol/animal-use reviews for Animal Care Committees
- Manage professional administration of the animal care program, including resource allocation and physical plant maintenance
- Champion regulatory excellence by ensuring compliance with provincial and federal standards
- Liaise with regulatory officials and communicate inspection outcomes to investigative staff
- Develop and implement facility-wide biosecurity measures, quality assurance protocols, and SOPs
Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with a valid license to practice in Ontario
- Graduate degree and certification (or eligibility for certification) by the American College for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM)
- Minimum of five years of relevant experience in a major university or biotech/pharma animal care program
- Demonstrated expertise in laboratory animal medicine, including clinical care, diagnosis, treatment, and post-mortem procedures
- Proven experience in staff management and supervision, preferably in a unionized environment
- Advanced knowledge of surgical practices, anesthesia, analgesia, and post-operative care for laboratory species
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
