About the role

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed reviews of health records to assign precise medical coding using ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, AIS, ISS, and CPT systems.
  • Enter codes and populate clinical information into the Expeditionary Medical Encounter Database (EMED).
  • Conduct medical records data abstraction for study-specific purposes and prepare reports on subjects such as general surgery, neurology, and radiology.
  • Perform regular quality audits, monthly re-abstractions, and quarterly Inter-rater Reliability (IRR) assessments to ensure data accuracy.
  • Collaborate with Principal Investigators and multi-disciplinary teams to ensure data integrity and compliance with research protocols and HIPAA standards.
  • Maintain access to military electronic health records (EHR) systems including JLV and TMDS.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in clinical coding or informatics.
  • Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist (CAISS) certification.
  • Proven experience with ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, AIS, ISS, and CPT coding.
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Ability to work on-site in San Diego, CA, within commuting distance of the Naval Health Research Center.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret security clearance.
  • Prior experience supporting the Defense Health Agency (DHA) with access to EHR systems.
  • Additional certifications such as Nurse Informaticist (NI-BC), CCS, CIC, RHIT, or RHIA.
