About the role

Responsibilities

  • Engage in direct legal representation, research, and policy work to improve access to health care, public benefits, and stable housing.
  • Supervise law students, volunteers, and staff, including overseeing intake, case advocacy, and reviewing legal correspondence and pleadings.
  • Assist the HJP Director with strategic planning, management, and administration of the clinic.
  • Train students and community partners on poverty law, client counseling, and the social determinants of health.
  • Maintain professional communication with community health centers and collaborating entities.
  • Support faculty research, develop materials for publication, and assist with event planning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
  • Admission or eligibility for admission to the Illinois Bar.
  • Two or more years of public interest direct legal and/or policy experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze legal sources, including statutes, regulations, and case law.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, interprofessional environment.
  • Commitment to client-centered lawyering and addressing health inequities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP), public interest, or law school clinic setting.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish.
  • Expertise in areas such as disability law, housing, immigration, education, or civil rights.
