About the role

Responsibilities

  • Assess and prioritize patient and family needs for developmentally appropriate child life interventions
  • Support patients and families in coping with healthcare-related stress through therapeutic and supportive relationships
  • Plan and implement therapeutic interventions and various individual or group play experiences
  • Advocate for patient and family-centered care through active communication and partnership
  • Provide education regarding illnesses, treatments, procedures, and coping techniques
  • Document treatment plans and outcomes within the electronic medical record
  • Participate as an active member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team
  • Orient and supervise volunteers and assist in the education of visiting students
  • Maintain a physically and emotionally safe, therapeutic, and healing environment

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Child Life or a relevant field (e.g., child development, family studies, psychology)
  • Completion of 10 specific college courses that meet the Child Life Certification Commission's academic eligibility requirements
  • Ability to obtain certification from the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) within 18 months of hire
  • Previous experience in a pediatric healthcare setting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current ACLP membership
  • Membership in the Great Lakes Association of Child Life Professionals (GLACLP)
