Certified Medication Aide (CMA)

Responsibilities

• Administer prescription medications under nurse supervision according to Ohio law
• Administer oral, topical, nasal spray, drops, rectal, vaginal, and inhalant medications
• Administer insulin via pen device when trained and authorized
• Follow the Six Rights of Medication Administration
• Maintain accurate records of all medication administration, including refusals or adverse reactions
• Monitor residents for medication side effects and report concerns to supervising nurse
• Ensure resident safety and report deviations from medication administration
• Maintain professional boundaries and treat residents with dignity
• Comply with universal and standard precautions
• Maintain confidentiality of all resident information

Requirements

• 18 years of age or older
• High School Diploma or GED
• Completion of an Ohio Board-approved Medication Aide Training Program
• Current certification as a CMA in Ohio
• Successful completion of CMA application and examination
• Ability to communicate effectively and read medication labels
• First Aid and CPR Certification
• Ability to comply with all Ohio Administrative Code rules for CMA practice
