About the role

Responsibilities

  • Create original catalog records and enhance existing records in WorldCat and Alma
  • Ensure efficient access to library materials in all formats, including audiovisual, serials, rare books, scores, and maps
  • Perform complex database maintenance to ensure the integrity and fullness of cataloging data
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the CBB (Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin) consortium on shared cataloging policies
  • Provide expertise to technical services and library staff regarding evolving cataloging standards and emerging trends

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library program or an advanced degree in a related discipline
  • At least one year of experience cataloging using MARC and RDA (including experience gained through education)
  • Familiarity with metadata and content standards such as MARC, RDA, LCSH, and LC Genre/Form Terms
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in descriptive metadata
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cataloging knowledge of one or more foreign languages
  • Experience classifying materials according to Library of Congress Classification
  • Familiarity with sheet music, maps, or other specialized formats in a library metadata context
