About the role

Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine engineering designs, specifications, and procedures to eliminate single points of failure across mechanical, electrical, and civil systems in critical facilities.
  • Perform rigorous Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to identify weaknesses and provide mitigation recommendations.
  • Act as a subject matter expert to review design documents, equipment specifications, construction submittals, and factory test results for redundancy compliance.
  • Create detailed Integrated Systems Testing and operational readiness procedures to validate failover capabilities for complex utility and infrastructure systems.
  • Ensure all redundancy designs adhere to industry standards, building codes (e.g., NFPA, ASHRAE), and internal reliability metrics.
  • Collaborate with project managers and vendor partners to scope and prioritize capital improvement projects focused on system modernization and risk mitigation.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of professional experience in designing, implementing, and commissioning mission-critical infrastructure (mechanical, electrical, or civil/structural systems).
  • Expert-level knowledge of diverse redundancy topologies (e.g., N, N+1, N+2, 2N, 2N+1) to ensure target uptime and availability SLAs.
  • Experience leading cross-functional engineering teams and external consultants through the design and construction process.
  • Thorough understanding of relevant building codes, industry standards (e.g., Uptime Institute Tiers, ANSI/TIA-942), and safety regulations.
  • Ability to travel approximately 35% of the time between Bay Area and Washington DC locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification or industry designation in Project, Engineering, or Facilities Services.
  • Experience working in mixed-use environments including offices, industrial sites, labs, or manufacturing facilities.
  • Demonstrable project management skills with the ability to advance projects with undefined scope and align stakeholders.
