Building Inspector I

Responsibilities

• Conduct inspections in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings to ensure compliance with established codes, procedures, and approved plans.
• Review construction plans, specifications, and engineered drawings to ensure they meet regulatory requirements.
• Create, provide, and file relevant notices and inspection reports based on field results.
• Provide interpretation, advice, and alternative solutions regarding building codes to contractors, property owners, and other departments.
• Maintain accurate records for code enforcement using computerized and manual systems.
• Perform department fiscal functions, including creating invoices and processing permit payments.
• Monitor and communicate changes in federal, state, and local rules, laws, and ordinances as they relate to assigned responsibilities.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Vocational or college coursework in building construction and International Building Codes.
• One year of experience in building construction or inspection.
• Experience working with the public.
• Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Residential & Commercial Building Inspector Certification (International Code Council - ICC).
• Ability to earn continuing education credits and pass testing to maintain certification.
