About the role

Responsibilities

  • Assist with field projects monitoring cave vital signs including cave crickets, bats, and aquatic biota
  • Navigate to and enter caves to set up equipment and record data
  • Process field data by reviewing forms, uploading digital files, and analyzing images/videos
  • Support monitoring of forest vegetation, ozone foliar injury, and invasive species
  • Assist with water quality monitoring and grab sample collection
  • Maintain accurate and legible field data sheets and digital entries
  • Communicate regularly with NPS staff regarding activities and challenges

Requirements

  • United States citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • Ability to commit to the full 26-week service term
  • Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check and government security background check
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to work in rugged terrain and varied weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, darkness)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest or experience in ecology, biology, or natural resource fields
  • Caving skills or experience with insects and confined spaces
  • Experience with plant identification in the southeastern U.S.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, ArcGIS Pro, R, RStudio, or Python
  • Ability to perform off-trail bushwhacking and overnight travel
