Backend Engineer

About the Company

FLORA is building the first creative operating system: an infinite canvas designed for the generative computing paradigm. Backed by tier-one investors like a16z and Menlo Ventures, the platform is used by creative powerhouses such as Pentagram, Lionsgate, and Nike.

Responsibilities

• Build the architecture that keeps the canvas fast and reliable as the platform scales to more generative models and tools
• Own and design the centralized execution engine to route generative tools, external model APIs, and canvas transformations
• Optimize performance by cutting database query overhead and implementing caching and in-memory stores
• Implement robust error handling including retries, circuit breakers, and fallbacks for generative APIs
• Scale the multi-modal pipeline to handle heavy payloads including text, high-res images, and video

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience in backend infrastructure, platform engineering, or distributed systems
• Hands-on experience building execution layers, execution graphs, state machines, or routing services
• Proven track record of resolving database bottlenecks through caching, query tuning, or schema redesigns
• Experience managing state and streaming for multi-modal infrastructure (text, image, video)
• Proficiency with TypeScript and comfort in serverless/edge runtimes

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with event-driven architectures or durable-workflow/state-machine engines
• Experience building backends for node-based, real-time, or collaborative (CRDT/multiplayer) interfaces
• Familiarity with Convex, Liveblocks, Vercel Workflow, or sandboxed code execution
