About the role
Responsibilities
- Assemble and mix complex live broadcasts, streaming content, and pre-produced elements in a high-pressure environment
- Identify and repair impaired audio to maintain NPR’s quality standards
- Analyze, repair, and mix audio on tight deadlines using tools such as equalizers, compressors, and noise reduction
- QC, mix, and sweeten audio and video podcasts using DAVID Systems MTE and AVID Pro Tools
- Monitor inbound and outbound content streams and automated play-out systems, rectifying technical outages quickly
- Schedule, connect, and route media over IP transmission methods including Comrex, Riverside, and Zoom
- Provide technical support, training, and guidance to journalists regarding technical facilities and remote recording equipment
- Troubleshoot unexpected technical situations confidently and effectively in a 24/7 production environment
Requirements
- Two years of technical experience in audio production (e.g., radio/TV broadcast, post-production, live sound, or music recording)
- Hands-on experience with AVID Pro Tools and iZotope RX in a production environment
- Proficiency in audio engineering fundamentals and signal flow
- Proven ability to identify and correct audio impairments and mix to established loudness standards
- Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to author training guides
- Ability to multitask and meet fast-approaching deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- Broadcast experience, preferably within public media
- Expert-level understanding of AVID Pro Tools, iZotope products, and various mixing consoles
- Experience mixing while taking live direction from editorial staff
- Advanced computer troubleshooting, networking, or software development abilities
- Proficiency in field recording and varied IP/smartphone audio transmission techniques
- Experience with audio for video, post-production, and sound design
- Degree in audio engineering or a related field of study
