About the role
Responsibilities
- Provide transactional academic advising to undergraduate students regarding admission policies, academic planning, and graduation requirements
- Deliver advising services through multiple channels including in-person, email, phone, and virtual environments
- Assess student academic records to provide guidance on majors, degree completion, and course selection
- Adjudicate student graduation by evaluating complex academic records and researching deficiencies
- Identify students requiring developmental support and refer them to appropriate campus resources or health-care professionals
- Assist with recruitment and retention activities, including registration information sessions and outreach events
- Prepare reports based on student data for external university reporting requirements
- Supervise student peer advisors and work-study students
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline
- 1-2 years of related experience in academic advising, student services, or a similar field
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Proficiency in information technology and office software
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in a multicultural environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a post-secondary advising or student services role
- Previous experience working at the University of British Columbia
- Fluency in Mandarin or other languages
- Intermediate or advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Experience working with international students
- Knowledge of Student Information Systems (SIS/SISC)
