About the role
Responsibilities
- Advise and counsel the division on complex legal matters including contract interpretation, litigation, and labor law
- Investigate and negotiate difficult prelitigation claims such as breach of contract and illegal but equitable claims
- Monitor and approve settlements for lawsuits including class actions and special education cases
- Represent the Comptroller’s Office at settlement conferences in federal and state courts
- Supervise division staff, including reviewing work assignments and conducting performance evaluations
- Assist the Division Chief in managing operational efficiency and claim resolution
- Design and implement new procedures for effective claim resolution
Requirements
- Admission to the New York State Bar
- Four years of recent full-time relevant legal experience
- Eighteen months of experience in a supervisory, administrative, or managerial capacity
- Must maintain membership in the New York State Bar in good standing
