Assistant Division Chief and Counsel, Law Division

Responsibilities

• Advise and counsel the division on complex legal matters including contract interpretation, litigation, and labor law
• Investigate and negotiate difficult prelitigation claims such as breach of contract and illegal but equitable claims
• Monitor and approve settlements for lawsuits including class actions and special education cases
• Represent the Comptroller’s Office at settlement conferences in federal and state courts
• Supervise division staff, including reviewing work assignments and conducting performance evaluations
• Assist the Division Chief in managing operational efficiency and claim resolution
• Design and implement new procedures for effective claim resolution

Requirements

• Admission to the New York State Bar
• Four years of recent full-time relevant legal experience
• Eighteen months of experience in a supervisory, administrative, or managerial capacity
• Must maintain membership in the New York State Bar in good standing
