About the role
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operations of the Public Safety Department to ensure the physical safety and security of campus facilities, faculty, staff, and students
- Supervise Public Safety Officers, including conducting ongoing and annual performance reviews and addressing disciplinary issues
- Serve as the department's training officer by assessing needs and developing professional development programs
- Act as the chief investigator for departmental investigations and support campus-wide administrative or conduct inquiries
- Maintain on-call availability for emergency response and determine immediate actions during campus crises to mitigate impact on life and property
- Manage crime prevention programming and ensure compliance with Clery Act and Student Right to Know Act requirements
- Serve as a liaison between Public Safety and other campus entities, such as Residence Life and external law enforcement agencies
- Assist the Executive Director of Public Safety with strategic planning, scheduling, and departmental oversight
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field
- Minimum of 40 hours of formal training in law enforcement, protection services, fire prevention, or security practices
- Experience developing and delivering training in an organizational setting
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to review and edit incident reports
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and social media platforms
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
- Ability to respond calmly and provide direction during emergencies and crises
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Leadership, Criminal Justice, or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years of law enforcement or campus security experience, including at least two years of supervisory experience
- Investigative experience in a law enforcement, corporate, or higher education setting
- Advanced NIMS ICS training certification and knowledge of relevant State and Federal laws impacting campus security
- Certifications in First Aid, CPR, and AED
