Assistant Counsel

Responsibilities

• Oversee significant patent portfolios in accordance with business strategic interests and Law Department policies
• Recommend modifications to patenting strategies based on the IP landscape and competitor positions
• Collaborate with business clients to identify inventions and protect value propositions
• Draft patent applications and oversee the outsourcing of drafting to ensure quality and cost-effectiveness
• Secure appropriate domestic and foreign patent protection for Corning inventions
• Lead the Patent Review Committee process for assigned portfolios
• Counsel clients on matters related to individual patents and overall portfolio management
• Work with Intellectual Asset Managers to optimize IP capture, invention mining, and client training

Requirements

• JD degree and membership in good standing with a state Bar
• Registered to practice before the USPTO
• BS and/or advanced degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., Materials Science, Mechanical/Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics)
• 3+ years of experience as a practicing patent attorney, with a focus on preparing and prosecuting patents

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience performing IP risk analyses and drafting infringement or validity opinions
• Prior experience as a patent examiner or in a technical engineering role within the industry
• Experience drafting IP agreements and negotiating IP transactions
• Experience in litigation
• Strong ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects and interact effectively with senior leadership
