Assistant Chief of Police

Responsibilities

• Assume command of the University Police Department in the absence of the Chief
• Provide visionary and ethical leadership to all sworn and non-sworn personnel
• Supervise and mentor subordinate command staff including Commanders, Captains, and Lieutenants
• Oversee complex personnel matters such as hiring, promotions, and disciplinary actions
• Assist in the development and implementation of departmental goals, policies, and procedures
• Participate in the preparation and monitoring of the departmental budget
• Manage day-to-day operations of assigned divisions including patrol, communications, and investigations
• Control and command major incidents, emergency management situations, and large university events
• Ensure compliance with federal and state laws including the Clery Act and Title IX
• Serve as a key liaison to local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related area from an accredited institution
• Eight years of certified police experience
• At least three years of supervisory experience
• Experience in staffing, training assessments, and policy analysis
• Alabama Peace Officer’s Standards and Training (APOST) certification (required within six months of employment)
• Valid Alabama driver’s license with a good driving record

Preferred Qualifications

• Graduate of an executive level Law Enforcement program (e.g., FBI National Academy, SLEDS, FLETC, or AACOP Certified Police Chief Program)
