Assignment Editor

Responsibilities

• Identify and assign breaking news, features, investigations, and context pieces
• Work with reporters and photographers to provide clear direction and constructive feedback
• Rewrite and edit a broad range of content, including photo descriptions and special investigations
• Monitor Marfeel to ensure the delivery of engaging and well-read stories
• Edit copy for style, language usage, flow, and logical presentation
• Respond to reader questions, tips, and concerns
• Maintain editorial standards by flagging potential libel and defamation
• Manage tracking documents and adhere to Metroland editorial best practices
• Work flexible hours, including statutory holidays, early mornings, evenings, and weekends

Requirements

• Degree or diploma in journalism, English, communications, or a related field
• At least two years of recent experience in a digital news environment
• Proficiency in Content Management Systems (CMS) and SEO best practices
• Deep knowledge of Canadian Press Style
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Strong news judgment and a sharp eye for detail
• Ability to work quickly and decisively in a deadline-driven environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of Torstar style
