Apprentice Freight Car Repairperson

Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough inspections to identify defects, wear, and damages in freight cars
• Perform maintenance tasks including air brake tests and pre-trip inspections
• Repair structural components by fabricating, cutting, or performing metal and wood replacement
• Remove and replace faulty components such as trucks, shoes, and coupler assemblies
• Operate various tools including acetylene torches, power tools, and welding equipment
• Communicate technical information and job procedures to colleagues and supervisors
• Ensure strict compliance with all railroad safety rules and FRA guidelines

Requirements

• Basic mathematic skills
• Valid driver's license
• Proficient verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to read and understand technical instructions and regulatory documents
• Ability to successfully pass an English assessment
• Ability to successfully pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience operating heavy equipment or construction machinery
• Experience working in environments requiring personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Proficiency in welding or possession of a welding certificate
• Experience using specialized tools like 100-ton jacks, air tools, or hydraulic equipment
• Flexibility to work on-call, overtime, and various shifts including weekends and holidays
