About the role
Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough inspections to identify defects, wear, and damages in freight cars
- Perform maintenance tasks including air brake tests and pre-trip inspections
- Repair structural components by fabricating, cutting, or performing metal and wood replacement
- Remove and replace faulty components such as trucks, shoes, and coupler assemblies
- Operate various tools including acetylene torches, power tools, and welding equipment
- Communicate technical information and job procedures to colleagues and supervisors
- Ensure strict compliance with all railroad safety rules and FRA guidelines
Requirements
- Basic mathematic skills
- Valid driver's license
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to read and understand technical instructions and regulatory documents
- Ability to successfully pass an English assessment
- Ability to successfully pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating heavy equipment or construction machinery
- Experience working in environments requiring personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Proficiency in welding or possession of a welding certificate
- Experience using specialized tools like 100-ton jacks, air tools, or hydraulic equipment
- Flexibility to work on-call, overtime, and various shifts including weekends and holidays
