About the role
Responsibilities
- Train in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of electrical components on diesel-electric locomotives under the guidance of a journeyman technician
- Use schematics and location circuit plans to perform scheduled electrical inspections and circuit tests
- Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical systems and components to assess problems and plan repairs
- Work with shop machinery, equipment, and tools to complete maintenance tasks
- Share technical information and job procedure recommendations verbally and in writing with coworkers and supervisors
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules, regulations, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards
Requirements
- Valid driver's license
- Basic computer skills and keyboarding experience
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to understand and apply basic mechanical principles
- Ability to pass an English assessment
- Ability to pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT)
Preferred Qualifications
- Completed formal electrical training program (community college, trade school, or military)
- Associate's degree in electricity or electronics
- Experience with large motor generators or high-voltage circuitry
- Experience working with electronics or electro-mechanical systems
- Experience working outdoors in variable weather or around moving heavy equipment
- Willingness to work on-call, overtime, and various shifts including weekends and holidays
