Apprentice Diesel Electrician

Responsibilities

• Train in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of electrical components on diesel-electric locomotives under the guidance of a journeyman technician
• Use schematics and location circuit plans to perform scheduled electrical inspections and circuit tests
• Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical systems and components to assess problems and plan repairs
• Work with shop machinery, equipment, and tools to complete maintenance tasks
• Share technical information and job procedure recommendations verbally and in writing with coworkers and supervisors
• Ensure compliance with all railroad rules, regulations, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards

Requirements

• Valid driver's license
• Basic computer skills and keyboarding experience
• Proficient verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to understand and apply basic mechanical principles
• Ability to pass an English assessment
• Ability to pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT)

Preferred Qualifications

• Completed formal electrical training program (community college, trade school, or military)
• Associate's degree in electricity or electronics
• Experience with large motor generators or high-voltage circuitry
• Experience working with electronics or electro-mechanical systems
• Experience working outdoors in variable weather or around moving heavy equipment
• Willingness to work on-call, overtime, and various shifts including weekends and holidays
