Appraisal Underwriter

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive reviews of residential appraisal reports to assess the reasonableness and supportability of concluded values
• Evaluate the appropriateness of comparable selection, adjustments, and reconciliation to identify methodological weaknesses
• Analyze market trends, neighborhood influences, and specific property characteristics impacting value
• Identify red flags indicative of appraisal fraud, inflation, or manipulation, including comparable stacking and collusion
• Assess transaction-level risk factors such as investor properties, DSCR, and cash-out refinances
• Provide clear, well-documented value conclusions and recommendations to support loan-level credit decisions
• Partner with underwriting teams to ensure consistent valuation standards across the department
• Support post-close quality control, audits, and regulatory exams related to valuation risk

Requirements

• Minimum of 3 years of appraisal review, underwriting, or valuation risk experience
• Direct experience working within a Non-QM lending environment
• Strong understanding of residential appraisal methodologies and market analysis
• Knowledge of appraisal fraud schemes across multiple property types (SFR, condos, 2–4 units)
• Bachelor's degree in finance, business, or a related field (preferred)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Automated Valuation Models (AVMs)
• Experience performing desk reviews or enhanced valuation analytics
