About the role
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily unit operations, including animal husbandry and facility maintenance for the Integrated Vivarium Services.
- Supervise, train, and provide guidance to animal care staff and research personnel.
- Perform cleaning and sanitation of animal housing areas, biosecurity control, and animal handling.
- Maintain accurate daily, weekly, and monthly records regarding animal welfare and facility status.
- Monitor the physical condition of facilities and equipment, notifying supervisors of necessary repairs.
- Coordinate the proper handling of bio-hazardous waste and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Work closely with Campus Veterinary Services to ensure adequate care for all animals.
Requirements
- Two years of experience as an Animal Technician, with at least one year of lead or supervisory responsibility.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license and the ability to drive a 1-ton lift gate truck with manual transmission.
- Ability to wear respiratory protective equipment as required by safety protocols.
- Ability to work a rotating schedule, including weekends, holidays, and after-hours.
- Ability to report to work during inclement weather or suspended operations as an essential employee.
- Must abstain from wearing or using scented products in the workplace.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior husbandry experience with a wide range of animal species in a research or teaching institution.
- Experience leading and training employees.
- AALAS Certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level or higher.
