Animal Keeper

Responsibilities

• Manage bird husbandry, including feeding, watering, and cleaning quarters using appropriate tools and disinfectants
• Monitor bird health, breeding conditions, and behavior, reporting any illnesses or injuries to supervisors or veterinary staff
• Implement enrichment and training programs using operant conditioning techniques
• Set up and maintain aviaries to meet both animal welfare and public exhibition standards
• Assist with animal transportation, handling, capture, and restraint as required
• Engage with zoo visitors through scheduled educational talks and answering questions about bird habits and zoo operations
• Maintain accurate daily records, including food consumption and health observations
• Adhere to strict hygiene and safety protocols to prevent disease and ensure the safety of animals and guests

Requirements

• High school diploma, or a degree in Zoology or a related field preferred
• At least one year of prior paid animal care experience in a controlled environment facility
• Familiarity with operant conditioning and enrichment techniques
• Ability to perform strenuous physical work, including lifting at least 25 kg repetitively
• Proficiency in English; Arabic language skills are a plus
• Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat
• Flexibility to work weekends and holidays

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with hand-raising birds
• Ability to work effectively within a multicultural team
