About the role

Responsibilities

  • Direct all operations associated with the housing, handling, health, and care procedures for live vertebrate animals.
  • Hire, supervise, and schedule part-time and student animal care workers to ensure daily coverage.
  • Manage facility infrastructure, equipment maintenance, and inventory of feed, bedding, and supplies.
  • Ensure daily care procedures and routine health checks are performed, alerting veterinarians of any illness or injury.
  • Maintain animal care records in compliance with IACUC and external regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and emergency response plans.
  • Collaborate with faculty researchers, the IACUC, and the Office of Research Protections to ensure regulatory compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Animal Science, Psychological Science, or a related field (candidates with 6+ years of directly related experience may qualify).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in a laboratory animal facility, specifically with rodents, fish, birds, and reptiles.
  • Minimum of 1 year of leadership, management, or supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements, including federal regulations and AAALAC standards.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform manual labor, including standing, walking, and bending.
  • Ability to work on-site and occasionally work weekends, after hours, or holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AALAS certifications: Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG), or Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR).
  • Experience participating in regulatory or accreditation inspections.
  • 6+ years of professional experience in animal facility management.
