About the role

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of animal care facilities, including staff supervision for 10-15 employees
  • Manage unit budgets, policies, procedures, and resource allocation
  • Provide or coordinate professional instruction in animal handling, restraint, euthanasia, and equipment use
  • Monitor the physical condition of facilities and equipment and arrange necessary repairs or maintenance
  • Develop and update standard operating procedures to support evolving facility needs
  • Offer training and oversight to faculty PIs and research staff regarding safety standards and animal health
  • Coordinate and supervise the proper handling of biohazardous waste

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in zoology, animal science, or a closely related field
  • Three years of experience in a laboratory animal care facility
  • At least one year of supervisory experience
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to wear respiratory protective equipment as required by safety standards
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and after hours on a rotating basis
  • Ability to work in essential personnel conditions, including inclement weather

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an animal research or laboratory setting
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist, ILAM, or CMAR Certification
  • Previous experience managing rats, mice, and livestock
  • Ability or willingness to drive a 3/4 ton lift gate truck with manual transmission
