AI & ML Engineer

Sandstone is on a mission to elevate in-house legal from a support function into a true strategic partner. We are building an AI-native operating system for in-house legal teams, enabling them to move at the speed of AI and deliver better outcomes through unified legal data and automated workflows.

Responsibilities

• Build production AI systems for legal workflows such as contract review, redlining, legal intake, drafting, and negotiation
• Improve retrieval and context systems that reason over contracts, playbooks, and business context
• Build document parsing and understanding pipelines to extract structure and entities from complex legal documents
• Develop agentic and workflow-based LLM systems for multi-step legal tasks
• Create evals, datasets, and feedback loops to measure quality, reliability, cost, and latency
• Partner with lawyers and customers to turn workflow feedback into product improvements
• Work across backend AI services, data pipelines, APIs, and product surfaces

Requirements

• 4+ years of experience as an AI engineer, ML engineer, full-stack engineer, or similar role
• Experience shipping applied AI or LLM-powered products (retrieval, agents, evals, or document understanding)
• Strong software engineering fundamentals across backend systems, data pipelines, and APIs
• Ability to own ambiguous technical and product problems from discovery to launch
• Strong judgment regarding quality, latency, cost, reliability, and UX tradeoffs
• Clear communication skills for explaining AI behavior to technical and non-technical teammates

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with legal, financial, or enterprise SaaS domains
• Experience with search, document AI, or workflow automation
