About the role
Responsibilities
- Conduct experimental and analytical research on advanced aerospace materials and their performance in extreme, high-temperature, and chemically reactive environments.
- Design and execute laboratory experiments, including the development and conduct of molecular beam experiments.
- Investigate gas-surface interactions, oxidation, thermal stability, and chemical reactivity of aerospace materials.
- Characterize material behavior and analyze degradation mechanisms to support aerospace and defense applications.
- Apply advanced characterization methods, interpret experimental data, and prepare technical reports and peer-reviewed publications.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers to support government-sponsored research programs.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related field.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance.
- Demonstrated experience in molecular beam experimentation and mass spectrometry.
- Expertise in materials science, materials characterization, and high-temperature chemistry.
- Knowledge of oxidation and degradation mechanisms and the thermal/chemical stability of advanced materials.
- Strong analytical, experimental, and technical writing skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with high-temperature testing, oxidation kinetics, ceramic materials, refractory metals, coatings, or composites.
- Proficiency with vacuum systems, gas-surface interactions, and analytical instruments for surface characterization.
- Ability to translate complex scientific findings into actionable technical conclusions.
- Prior experience working in a government, defense, national laboratory, or university research environment.
